Batuta – The Perfect Storm

A film many of us still remember, when all the negative factors come together to create a drama. But what about in reserve when all the positive factors come together to create magnificence. When everything happens at the precise moment, and a perfect plan is formed, the result is achieved, as we see in Batuta.

* Born with good genetics from both parents
* Raised in excellent and natural conditions
* The breeder had the right breeding philosophies and financial means to offer the best
* Right from the beginning she has been ridden by quality professional riders
* The coach is highly successful in International Competition

Bruno Moreira – I consider to be a rider of great quality, was the first professional to come into contact with Batuta.

Bruno – “I saw the filly in the field when she was around 2 years old, when she reached 3 years old I started backing her calmly and slowly as she was very fine. At 3.5 years old (already ridden), she went to her first dressage presentation at the Academia de Dressage Daniel Pinto (Dressage Academy). Where she immediately received a purchase offer that was not accepted. In 2010, she started her sports career where she entered national 4 year old competitions, with averages above 73% and entered a CDI in Comporta, she was always ridden and competed by me. Then, when I left Herdade das Figueiras, Pedro Matos completed the sports year with her”.

After this, Batuta left Portugal and went to Jan Bemelmans home, where she was ridden by Jan and his team. Later on she left the home of Jan and went to Spain to the be handed to José António Garcia Mena (one of the best Spanish riders of today). José completed the work of the mare and demonstrated excellent results. Concerning his relationship with Batuta.

JoseJosé António Garcia Mena reveals that, “I have ridden many horse in my life but there has never been one as special as Batuta. She possesses a very strong character but remains sweet. An incredible power but at the same time sensitive. That power was never used as a brute force, but always in my favour as her rider.

She always made me feel very attached to her because she understood that I directed her power. This incredible animal gave me impressive sensations. As it happened, never has another horse offered me such an amazing extra strength in order to please me. But she always wanted to give me more.

When we connected mentally, it was a pleasure to ride her everyday, for that, she will always have a special place in my life. I only wish success to Batuta because she is a exceptional example and impressive potential, enough to be at the same standard as the best examples in this sport.”

batuta 1 One year after her stay with Garcia Mena, destiny directed – at the right time, that someone in Portugal had the courage to buy her and hand her over to Gonçalo Carvalho, Portugal’s top rider, who competed in the 2012 Olympics with Rubi and achieved fantastic results.

The perfect storm is almost formed. Up until now it has been mostly genetical, strategy and means, technique and professional, not much was missing to complete all that is required.

What has Batuta got that is different? Her mechanical and emotional abilities are outstanding. I dare to add the fact that Batuta, has an unusual frame for the dressage arena and she is a mare – not many mares are doing Grand Prix. Many will remember, a phenomenal mare that was lost far too early in her dressage career – Blue Matiné.

It looks like Batuta could occupy the place left by Blue Matiné – I believe so.

Like me, thousands of lovers of this sport are feeling excited about her potential – judges, riders and spectators. Gonçalo and Batuta recently won with great merit, the CDI of Munich, scoring 72.4% in the Grand Prix Special. This, at 8 years of age! A child growing. I risk saying, that her potential is 80% if she fulfills her potential, we will all be doing our maths – Bring it on!
